Shape Shuffle

  • Welcome to Shape Shuffle. An arcade-style game where players sort shapes into buckets. The shapes fall out of a pipe, and the players must sort them into the correct buckets labeled with the corresponding shape. Once all the buckets are filled, players win. If too many shapes fall out and the pipe backs up, players lose. The game has 15 levels, and I added bonus objectives for things like speed and accuracy to make the game more challenging.

I later added a story and creatures called Shape Eaters to make the game more complex. However, I realized that the added complexity made the game difficult to complete, so I decided to put the game on hold.

  • Shape Shuffle features simple but challenging gameplay that keeps players engaged. The bonus objectives provide an extra layer of difficulty, and players can replay levels to improve their performance. The game's graphics are bold and use bright colors, making it visually appealing. The story and creatures in the later version of the game added depth and variety to the falling shapes.

  • As a solo developer, one of the main challenges I faced while creating Shape Shuffle was managing complexity. While I was excited to add a story and creatures to the game, the added complexity made it difficult for me to complete the project. I also struggled with balancing the difficulty of the game, as I wanted it to be challenging but not frustrating for players. Another challenge was creating appealing graphics with limited resources, as I wanted to keep the game's development costs low.

  • During the development of Shape Shuffle, I learned the importance of managing complexity in game design. While adding a story and creatures to the game was exciting, it ultimately made the game too complicated for a solo developer to complete. I also learned that it is essential to prioritize feasible projects, as Shape Shuffle became overwhelming, causing me to abandon the project temporarily.

  • In the future, I plan to return to Shape Shuffle and remove the added complexity of the story and creatures, making the game more accessible to players. I will focus on creating a solid arcade game with simple mechanics and clear objectives. The game's graphics will feature bold shapes and colors, making it visually appealing to players. By simplifying the game, I will be able to create a solid product that can be enjoyed by players without sacrificing the original vision of the game.
